No apology from CPC candidate for remark critics say was age-ist.

Anita Neville

Shelly Glover

Conservative candidate Shelly Glover caused a stir Monday when she said that Winnipeg Liberal candidate Anita Neville, 68, has “passed her expiry date.” Glover’s campaign The Conservative campaign issued this statement from her today:

WINNIPEG – First of all, I would like to remind seniors in the Winnipeg area that Ms. Neville just voted to oppose the Conservative Government’s plan to increase GIS payments to the most vulnerable, lowest income seniors in Canada — a measure that would benefit single seniors by up to $600 and senior couples by up to $840.

My remarks were clear: I was referring to Ms. Neville’s performance as an MP, and only that. In my opinion, Ms. Neville has ceased to be an effective representative of her constituents. I believe someone new, of any age, with new ideas would be a more effective representative for the people of Winnipeg South Centre.

Our government has delivered more for seniors than any other government in Canadian history.

Glover’s statement is, at least, a refreshing rejection from the non-apology apology — “If my perfectly reasonable remarks offended anyone who is hypersensitive, I guess I’m sorry” — used so often in the p0litical sphere.

    • I AM A 83 YEAR OLD SENIOR, AND I DEFINITELY AGREE WITH SHELLY GLOVER. SOME PEOPLE LIKE TO TWIST THINGS TOO MUCH.
SUCH HYPOCRITES SOME OF THESE MP’S ARE. WHEN A FORMER BUDGET (CONSERVATIVE) CAME OUT AND JACK LAYTON VOTED AGAINST IT. (THERE WAS SOMETHING IN IT FOR SENIORS) all he could say to me was (Budgets are funny things)

Now in the present campaign, he bragging how he would help seniors. GOD HELP US WITH THIS GROUP.

      Marlies

  1. More garbage from conservatives. How embarrassing for them. If I’m not mistaken the budget was never voted on because the corrupt conservative government was defeated after recieving the first ever contempt of parliament ruling which resulted in the conservative government no longer having the confidence of parliament. More lies from conservative Glover. Seniors would be nuts to vote conservative – especially in Glover’s riding.

  2. The lone reaction (Seniors Upset) quoted by the press in this article was Susan Eng, an executive within CARP. Ms. Eng asked not one CARP member for a position, or reaction. So it was her view alone, a view that purposely chose to take Ms. Glover’s remark as an age, versus competence, issue. Wonder why? From Wikipedia:

“Eng was first appointed to the Metropolitan Toronto Police Services Board in 1989 by the Liberal government of David Peterson, she was Chair from 1991 to 1995 … Eng’s appointment to chair the Toronto Police Services Board was opposed by some police officers despite being endorsed by the Premier of Ontario Bob Rae”.

Qu’elle surprise that Ms Eng would allow herself to be quoted as “speaking for CARP”, despite having no such authorization. Nor is it a position of CARP. I’m a member, and know this FOR SURE.

  3. Ms. Glover has foot-in-mouth disease. She speaks before she thinks.
Has any Harper Conservative ever given a credible apology for any of the inane statements that have been made since 2003 when Harper cobbled together his New Right Conservative coalition?
The answer to my rhetorical question is, No! Of course not.

Harper takes the lead in this matter. His government is found in contempt of Parliament and he steadfastly refused to apologize to the Speaker of the House, the MPs, and to Canadian about his government’s contemptuous behaviour.

  6. “Age-ist”? Give me a break. Have we become so politically correct and whiney that we can’t speak our minds? This is probably the most worthless of all the manufactured crisis the Liberals can come up with. That this would even appear in a news aggregator just confirms that the Liberals are well past their “Best Before” date.

  7. Thanks for the compare-and-contrast photos on this item!
If I was shopping, I wouldn’t even bother checking the best-before date for the right-wing harridan.
